맥도날드 사상 첫 흑인 CEO 톰슨
(CHICAGO)McDonald’s Corp. Chief Executive Officer Jim Skinner is retiring, handing the challenge of sustaining one of the restaurant industry’s strongest runs to the company’s president, Don Thompson.
The 67-year-old Mr. Skinner, CEO since 2004, will step down June 30 after 41 years at the fast-food giant, McDonald’s said in a written statement late Wednesday. Analysts have long wondered when Mr. Skinner would retire; the 48-year-old Mr. Thompson, who is also the company’s operating chief, has long been at the top of the list of candidates to succeed him. Mr. Thompson will become the chain’s first African-American CEO.
A 22-year veteran of McDonald’s, Mr. Thompson helped lead some major initiatives at the burger giant, including the company’s national rollout of specialty coffee drinks. He has helped guide McDonald’s through the economic downturn, making it one of the most successful restaurant chains in recent years.
Under his watch as operating chief and as president of McDonald’s USA before that, the company has expanded its menu offerings, renovated thousands of stores around the globe, improved customer service with initiatives such as faster, double-lane drive-thrus, and pushed the company into more international markets.
As operating chief since January 2010, he has directed global strategy and operations for more than 33,000 McDonald’s restaurants in 119 countries.
(시카고) 맥도날드사(社)의 최고 경영자(CEO)인 짐 스키너는 레스토랑 업계의 가장 강력한 질주를 유지하는 난제를 현(現) 회장인 돈 톰슨에게 이양할 계획이다.
맥도날드는 2004년 이래 CEO 자리에 있었던 67세의 스키너 씨가 이 거대한 패스트 푸드 회사에서의 41년을 마치고 6월30일에 퇴임할 것이라고, 지난 수요일에 서면으로 발표했다.
애널리스트들은 스키너 씨가 언제 은퇴할 것인지에 대해 오랜 기간 궁금하게 여겨왔다. 역시 이 회사의 최고영업이사이기도 한 48세의 톰슨 씨는 그 뒤를 이을 후보자 명단의 최상위에 오랫동안 머물러 왔다. 톰슨 씨는 이 체인(맥도날드) 최초의 흑인 CEO가 될 것이다.
맥도날드에서 22년을 근무한 베테랑인 톰슨 씨는 이 버거업계의 거대기업에서 ‘맥도날드 커피음료’의 전국 판매를 포함한 몇 가지 중요한 기획을 이끌어 냈다. 그는 맥도날드를 근래 가장 성공한 레스토랑 체인의 하나로 만들어 냄으로써 이 회사가 불황을 극복해 나가는 데 기여했다.
최고영업이사로서, 그리고 그 전에는 미국 맥도날드의 회장으로서 그의 감독 하에, 회사는 메뉴 품목을 확대해 왔으며, 전 세계에 존재하는 수천 개 매장을 개선하고, 보다 신속한 2개차선의 운전자용 주문라인(드라이브 스루)과 같은 혁신을 통해 고객 서비스를 개선해 왔으며, 또한 회사를 세계 시장으로 보다 더 진출하도록 해 왔다.
