人生讚歌, A Psalm of Life
슬픈 사연으로 내게 말하지 말라,
인생이 한낱 헛된 꿈에 지나지 않는다고!
잠자는 영혼은 죽어있기 때문이고
만물은 보여지는 그대로만은 아니기에...
인생은 실제적이다! 인생은 진지하다!
그리고 무덤이 인생의 목표는 아니다.
너는 본래 흙이니, 흙으로 돌아가라.
이것은 영혼을 두고 한 말은 아니었다.
향락도 아니다, 슬픔도 아니다,
우리가 향하는 종착지, 우리가 가는 그 길은...
그러나 행동하는 것이다. 각각의 내일이
오늘보다 나은 삶의 우리를 맞이하도록...
예술은 길고, 세월은 날아간다.
우리 심장은, 튼튼하고 용감할지라도,
여전히, 감싸진 북과 같이 울린다.
무덤을 향한 장례행진을 위해...
이 세상 드넓은 싸움터에서,
인생의 거친 야영지에서,
말 못하며 쫓기는 짐승이 되지 말라!
싸움하여 이기는 영웅이 되어라!
아무리 즐거워도, 미래를 믿지 말라!
죽은 과거는 과거 속에 묻어 버려라!
행동하라, 살아있는 현재에 행동하라!
안에는 심장이, 위에는 하나님이 있다.
위인들의 생애는 우리를 깨우친다.
우리도 장엄한 인생을 이룰 수 있다고...
또한, 떠나가면서, 우리 삶 뒤켠으로
세월의 모래톱에 발자국을 남길 수 있다고...
그 발자국... 아마도 다른 이, 곧
인생의 장엄한 대양을 항해하던
고독하고 조난 당한 한 형제가
그 발자국을 바라보고 심기일전할 것이다.
그러니, 우리 곧추 일어나 일해 나가자,
어떤 운명에도 굴하지 않는 심장으로...
끊임없이 이루고, 끊임없이 추구하면서,
수고함과 기다림을 애써 배우자.

Tell me not in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou are, to dust thou returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act, - act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sand of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us then be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
